First Friday: Anne Cruikshank & Deborah Traer- "Mindscape/Landscape"

In this exhibit, digital photographer Anne Cruikshank and landscape painter Deborah Traer create a mash-up showcase, bringing together their two dissimilar yet cohesive bodies of work to explore the power of atmosphere.

Cruikshank's work takes both photos of forgotten ancestors and mass-produced artworks and changes a solitary detail to become something else entirely. The aim of these works is to show that though art need not have meaning, it must be meaningful; that is, the interpretation need not be fixed and immutable but that artwork should elicit a response in the viewer.

Meanwhile, Traer's paintings aim to capture the ever-changing mood of nature. By conveying the feelings/memory of a place, and not just a literal description, she explores how the individual derives such memories of nature from their own history and experiences.

Join us for the opening reception First Friday, February 2nd, 5-9pm. 20% of sales will go to Watson Children's Shelter.

January First Friday: Julie Gautier-Downes

Gautier-Downes’ studio practice is the investigation of somatic traces left in barren landscapes that become artifacts of the past. The domestic vestiges that now haunt these spaces are transformed into a narrative waiting to be deciphered. Her process involves documenting or recreating deserted houses and abandoned items that allude to the home and family. The spaces she records seem to be in a perpetual state of disarray, imbuing the notion that a single event stimulated the need for the inhabitants to leave hastily. Gautier-Downes re-frames each scene into her rendition of the stories each space unveils. The accounts she relays reveal the trauma each housing structure suffers as it slowly decomposes into the environment as well as the physicality of displacement.

Opening reception will also feature live music by Anything But Susan.

December 1st Friday: Linds Sanders & Jolene Brink

For December we are pleased to present a mulitimedia exhibit/installation by Missoula artists Jolene Brink & Linds Sanders:

"How do we map something ever changing?
What happens when the boundaries recede or return?
WaterMaps is a collaborative exploration of place and history that reimagines glacial lake Missoula as a repository for calcium homes and wonder. Using encaustics, ceramics, wood, water, found maps, and poetry, this series asks viewers to interrogate the mythology of what an ancient lake might have held—and continues to hold—for inhabitants above and below the surface."

Join us for an opening reception First Friday, December 1st, 5-9pm. Also featuring live music by Butter Behemoth. 20% of sales will go to support the Missoula Food Bank.

Exhibit runs through December 30th.

October First Friday: Ella Watson

October First Friday: Ella Watson

This October, E3 is proud to present the work of Ella Watson:

Ella Watson’s recent work serves as a larger metaphor for Earth formations and life in general. By building up multi-colored layers of cold wax and oil paint, Ella scrapes away the wax to reveal the colors below. Often using the scrapings elsewhere in the work, this additive/subtractive process mimics the evolution of landforms as well as singular life. The same can be said for a person’s life: when things are taken and given, when changes happens, one is forced to adapt thus creating their life story.

Recently, in light of the boiling political and social atmosphere in America, Ella's analysis of nature is taking a turn, focusing on genetics, racism, and the color spectrum.

For more information, visit www.ellawatson.net, email the artist at bella.watson@gmail.com or like her on Facebook.

Join us for the opening reception of this exhibit with refreshments and music by Joe Difulgatis. 20% of sales go to support the Missoula Food Bank. Exhibit ends October 28th.

Our own gallery director will be having her first solo show at E3!  In this new body of work, Nelson delves into the psychology and spiritual ramifications of how our outside world affects us, and what we produce with the things we let in to our minds and souls.  Nelson creates an immersive experience with her wood sculptural paintings and installation that take the viewer on  at times an incredibly personal journey, and then address external cultural/social issues as well.

Opening reception will feature music by The Organism; 20% of sales go to Living Art of Montana.
